Johnston Grew 173% Since 2000. It Didn't Do It All at Once.

Pioneer Hi-Bred was founded here in 1926 by Henry A. Wallace, who went on to become U.S. Vice President — that's the kind of institutional anchor (along with Camp Dodge, the Iowa National Guard's headquarters, and Iowa PBS) that gave Johnston a reason to grow long before it became one of the fastest-growing cities in the metro. And it grew in visible layers: Green Meadows West went in during the 1990s around Lew Clarkson Park, Northwest Johnston mixed newer construction with established homes through the 2000s and 2010s, and Westridge is still adding houses built as recently as 2024.

That layering matters more than the growth number itself. A 1990s Green Meadows West home is a different remodeling job than a 2024 Westridge build, even though both are technically "new" by the standards of towns like Panora or Stuart.
