Prairie Trail — the 1,031-acre planned community built where the old college campus used to sit — is the Ankeny most people picture now: walkable blocks, a town center, homes built in the last decade with median prices well above what you'd pay elsewhere in the metro. It's a good-looking neighborhood, and it's also full of builder-grade finishes that a lot of owners want to move past once they've lived with them a couple years.

That's a different job than what's needed a mile or two away in Ankeny's older Uptown district, where the homes predate the growth boom entirely, or in established, family-built neighborhoods like Northbrook that never got the planned-community treatment and don't need it. Fastest-growing city in the state or not, "Ankeny" isn't one type of house, and treating it like one is how you end up with a remodel that doesn't fit the home it's in.

• Upgrading builder-grade kitchens and baths in newer Prairie Trail-area homes to something that actually matches what the owners paid for the lot
• Additions and renovations in Uptown and other established neighborhoods, where the homes are older and the work looks more like what we do in Adel or Panora
• General contracting for anything in between, including the newer developments still filling in along Ankeny's northern edge
